"The Illustrated Broadside" is the new exhibit at the Wimberly Library's
Jaffe Atrium Gallery at Florida Atlantic University. Broadsides became
widely used soon after the development of printing in the Fifteenth Century
for royal proclamations and official notices, and later evolved into a
vehicle for political agitation. Today, broadsides are more likely to have
a literary association, challenging printers to make the most of one
confined plane, which is a very different challenge than that of a book.

The exhibit features letterpress broadsides by a wide range of printers,
among them David Wolfe (Wolfe Editions), Terrence Chouinard (The Wing & the
Wheel Press), Jenny Sapora (Blue Juniper Press), Leonard Baskin (The
Gehenna Press), Hatch Show Print, and even one or two of my own (Red Wagon
Bookworks).

The Jaffe Atrium Gallery is located just outside the Jaffe Book Arts
Collection at the Wimberly Library, Third Floor East. The exhibit, which
may be viewed during regular library hours, continues at the Wimberly
Administrative Offices, Second Floor West . The Jaffe Collection proper is
available by appointment by calling the Collection at 561 297 0226, or by
responding to me by email: <jcutrone@fau.edu>.

Don't forget also the first of the Wimberly Library's Book Arts Lecture
Series, Friday, May 24 at 3pm at the FAU Board of Trustees Room, Williams
Administration Building. Our guest speaker is bookbinder Paula Marie
Gourley, with a talk titled "Cracking Eggs and Other Ways of Making Books."
Ms. Gourley developed the bookbinding curriculum at the University of
Alabama and taught the craft there for 13 years before establishing her own
bindery in Eugene, Oregon in 1998.
