Ars Brevis Press has announced its new schedule of book arts and letterpress
workshops for Summer, 2002. Class sizes are limited, so be sure to register
early. Please note that discounts are available (as always) for members of
the Cincinnati Book Arts Society (CBAS). Accommodations are available.

Introduction to Letterpress
(Evening or weekend workshops)
Learn the basics of typesetting, working with images and printing simple
jobs such as greeting cards (including wedding invitations), business cards
or broadsides (small prints). No prior letterpress experience required.
Class limit: 5. Fee: $125 + materials*
Evening workshops: Tues., Wed. and Thurs. evenings from 6-8:30pm
Session E1: May 21-23
Session E2: June 18-20
Session E3: July 9-11
Weekend workshops:
Session W1: June 15-16
Session W2: June 22-23

Letterpress Printing with Photopolymer Plates
(Runs two Saturdays)
The use of photopolymer plates allows you to create letterpress designs on
the computer or by hand, or a combination of both. The first day will be
spent learning the basics of how these plates work, including a variety of a
hand techniques as well as scanning and set-up of computer files for polymer
output. Then wešll order the plates and be ready to print at the next
meeting. Class limit: 5. Fee: $125 + materials* Prior experience required.
July 13 & July 27, 
1-5pm

Letterpess Intensive
(Week-long course)
For those who want to get beyond the basics and complete a major project. We
will deal with advanced techniques of typography and printing technology,
including press adjustments, for the best control of your editioned work, as
well as learning more about paper and various types of bindings.
Participants must have taken Intro to Letterpress or have prior experience.
Fee: $250 + materials* June 3-7, 11-5pm

Experimental Letterpress: Breaking
the Rules
(Weekend workshops)
Finer points of spacing and typography? Bah humbug! Learn how to break the
rules and put some expression into your work. Wešll explore overprinting,
mixing fonts (horrors!), varnishes, monoprinting and other experimental
techniques. Limit: 5
Fee: $125 + materials* Prior experience helpful but not required.
April 13 & 27 1-5pm
 
Paste Papers
(Evening workshop)
Come learn how to make this simple decorative paper, which can be used for
book or box covers, cards or gifts. Class limit: 5.
Fee: $35 (most materials provided)
May 28, 6-8:30pm
June 11, 6-8:30pm

Elegant Photo Albums & Scrapbooks
(Evening workshop)
 You will create a beautiful photo album with screw-post or Japanese
binding, and learn how to preserve your most precious mementos. Archival
materials will be provided, although participants can bring their own for
customizing their books. Limit: 5
Fee: $45 (includes most materials)
June 25, 6-8:30pm
July 16, 6-8:30pm

Simple Blank Books
This case bound book form can be made without any special equipment, and
will give you a versatile format for everything journals to guest books.
Materials provided, although participants can bring their own for
customizing their books. Limit: 5 Fee: $75
July 20, 11-5pm

Beyond the 
Digital Book
(Two Saturdays)
For those who want to delve more deeply into the finer points of typography,
design and layout to produce a book with digital means.Many of the mysteries
of the digital world will become clearer, and you will learn how to use your
own equipment to best advantge in your work. Must have access to page layout
software and have some prior experience. Some materials provided. Limit:3
Fee: $100 +materials
August 3 & August 10
1-5pm

Private instruction and shop rental are available. Please call  more
details. Fees are due upon registration. Fees will be refunded if the
workshop is cancelled, or if participants cancel at least 2 weeks before the
workshop.
 
Accommodations available. Call for details.


*Materials costs will vary depending on the project. Workshop fees
discounted 10% for Cincinnati Book Arts Society members.
