An alternative to leather for bookbinding:
emboss on Canson mi-teint pastel papers,
using a deeply etched metal plate and an
etching press. The paper comes in a wide
range of colors and slightly changes color on
the raised areas once it goes through the
press. The paper should be put in the paper
soak tray (used for printing etchings) for just a
few seconds and then blotted between towels
before printing. When the print has dried,
adhere it to book board. I have used this
embossing technique for years and people
often comment that it looks like leather was
used.

Dear list;

Does anyone on the list know if buffalo hide
will tan into good
bookbinding leather? I have heard that
moose and deer are too
flexible. If buffalo can be tanned, can anyone
advise on a good
tanner in northern Alberta, Canada, or
instructions to give a tanner?

Thank you in advance,
Sam.
