Don seems to have got to the essence of the matter:  "a product of my
individual attention and involvement in its creation".

It is the consciousness which the binder puts into his work which enlivens it.

There are machines, and there are automatic machines.  Few of us use the latter
in our work as hand binders.   Whereas simple machines, where the action is
being directed by your attention, are really quite acceptable.
