Re: [BKARTS] request for suggestions on book making books or journals

When I was taught to look at glued bindings - our first example was the
phone book (it takes a beating)? Whenever someone comes into the
bookstore, it's my one 'free' piece of give-away information. We take
the phone book - open it out and demonstrate how a book should open and
how the grain of paper makes it work / it's almost like magic - they
think I'm very wise, wow - makes my day...
Busy packing books for the 23rd Ottawa Antiquarian Book Fair, what
better way to spend a weekend; if you happen to be in the neighbourhood
it's at the Congress Centre - Colonel By Drive 12:00 - 5:00 Saturday,
11:00 - 6:00 on Sunday, drop by and see us. Alice

Sara,

In my experience, no "perfect bound" book is as durable as a sewn book.
Even Smythe sewing is more durable. The best adhesive binding is the
"fanned" adhesive binding. Commercial adhesive bindings (the most
prevalent)
too often suffer from adhesive failure, where the adhesive is overcooked
and
brittle or has cooled before application and will not adhere.
The ones not affected by adhesive failure, fail from paper failure,
where the
paper fiber become detached from the rest of the sheet. In those cases,
the
adhesive goes one way and the pages another. To my way of thinking,
adhesive
bindings should be limited to paperbacks, which are by their nature
ephemeral.
