Apart from the legal view, it seems common sense that a slide used for educational purposes, with no revenue incoming from such use, should not require paying the artist a fee, but if it's use  is a factor that ultimately generates income, then both permission and a fee (negotiated with the artist or representative) should be paid, if requested.
   Then again, at least notification, when using someone else's work (image. research, writing etc.) should be at least a courtesy.  Otherwise don't be surprised if that person is eventually pissed at you (at the least).
