The first  "Flag Book," as it is now known, was Hedi Kyle's April Diary (1979):

Another of her "flag books" (A B C, 1988) is in the online exhibition at:

In 1993 There was an exhibition at the Center for Book Arts of Hedi's work and
the work of many artists who were influenced by and used her inventive book
structures.
