[BKARTS] Book Arts Exhibit in Forest Grove, Oregon

The Book, Print and Time in Cawein Gallery

Forest Grove, Ore. (January 16, 2003) - "The Book,
Print, and Time," a collaborative exhibit of the
Northwest Print Council and the Portland Book Arts
Collective, will be on display at Pacific University’s
Kathrin Cawein Gallery from February 3 through 28,
with opening receptions scheduled for noon to 1 p.m.
on Friday, February 7, and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on
Saturday, February 8, in the gallery on the
University’s campus. The two organizations have come
together to promote their media and show how
printmaking and bookmaking are related.

This exhibit showcases the hand-pulled print and books
from the northwest region and was assembled with the
theme of temporality and the fleeting nature of time.
The concept of time, while specific, allows for a wide
range of viewpoints and approaches. It also plays off
well against the structure of the book, which some
cultural critics define as too linear and rigid. Some
artists in the exhibit have found the traditional book
format an appropriate vehicle to comment on this
topic, while others have chosen to break apart the
structure and experiment with alternative forms. The
prints have been chosen from the extensive Northwest
Print Council collection to address the theme of time,
combining the traditional and contemporary print.

This exhibit is interactive, allowing the viewer to
see the artwork on the walls while being involved with
the artist's books placed around the gallery. The
viewer will see the related ideas and techniques in
both prints and books.

The prints and books in the exhibit rely on historical
techniques of production. The artwork is made by hand
but with contemporary themes and ideas. The histories
of hand printmaking and hand bookmaking have always
been intertwined, relying on similar processes.

The Portland Book Arts Collaborative is an informal
association of book artists who meet monthly in the
Portland area, exchanging ideas and techniques while
getting feedback from the other artists.

The Northwest Print Council is an association of
working printmakers from the northwest states and
Canada who promote and educate about the hand-pulled
print.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by
appointment. Admission is free. For more information
