For a low tech approach, there is a halftone screen that's used to prepare
continuous tone images for Gocco printing that might be useful if you really
get desperate. It's a sheet of plastic with a pattern printed on it that you
simply place over your image before photocopying. The resulting copy is now
suitable for mass reproduction, albiet with the character of the image
slightly different from the original photograph.
