[BKARTS] POP-UP EXHIBIT

Broward County Libraries Division's
BIENES CENTER FOR THE LITERARY ARTS
THE DIANNE & MICHAEL BIENES SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND RARE BOOK LIBRARY

is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition:

Paper Engineering: The Pop-up Book Structures of Vojtech Kubasta, Robert Sabuda, and Andrew D. Binder: January 16-March 12, 2004

The free exhibition showcases 55 titles by three paper engineers:

#1) A native of Czechoslovakia, Vojtech Kubasta (1914-1992) studied architecture, designed puppet theater scenery, and worked as a book illustrator. His pop-up children's books from the 1950s-1980s were printed in Czechoslovakia and distrubted by an English publisher. They contain complex and colorful pop-up scenes that were created from single boards without elaborate gluing and assembly.

#2) Robert Sabuda is the contemporary creator of pop-up versions of classic children's books including Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and The Night Before Christmas. His pop-up structures are perhaps some of the most complex and innovative of the genre. He is often seen on national television discussing his elaborate paper engineered structures.

#3) Andrew D. Binder is a Ft. Lauderdale artist and the co-winner of the 2001 Florida Artists' Book Prize. He holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Miami, and is the coordinator of applications and webmaster for Florida Atlantic University. In his one-of-a-kind pop-up artists' books, he frequently uses intricate netting to create gravity-defying structures and images.
