Happy New Year Book Lovers:
The Los Angeles Book Arts Center's Program Director, Marcia Moore, has been
hard at work putting together an interesting line up of classes and events for
you. The following is an update on what's available. Please join us this
year on our exciting adventure into books and book art.
January 15 - Free Book Arts Lecture with Carolee Campbell at the Beverly
Hills Public Library, 444 North Rexford Dr., Beverly Hills. Carolee Campbell is
the proprietor of Ninja Press which she inaugurated in 1984. She works alone,
designing each edition of books which she illustrates, hand-sets and prints
letterpress. She binds the editions as well. Her books are exhibited
internationally and collected both privately and in such institutions at the Getty
Center and the British Library. Please join us and enjoy the company of the book
arts community this Thursday evening. Reception 6:30 PM, Talk to begin
promptly at 7:00 PM.
January 17 - Paste Paper Day - There are still a couple of spaces left in the
morning session of our fun and messy paste paper class. This is a chance to
create your own decorative paper. Session begins at 9:30 AM and goes till
January 24 and 25 - Sound and Light - Here is a chance to learn how to make
your books and book art sing, talk, make all kinds of noises and light up in
many ways. You will learn basic electrical concepts and constructions to add
these amazing expressions to your art work. 9:30 to 4:30 Saturday and Sunday.
$215.00 - nonmember fee/includes materials
January 31 - Pop Ups? The Sequel - Here is a chance to continue with your
basic knowledge of pop up structures. Spend the day learning complex pop up
structures. 9:30 to 4:00 Saturday. $110.00 - nonmember fee/includes materials
February 6-8 - Antiquarian Book Fair at the Los Angeles Airport Marriott
Hotel. 5855 W. Century Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. Friday - 2 to 9 PM, Saturday - 11
AM to 7 PM, Sunday - 11 AM to 5 PM. We will be showing and demonstrating book
art with other book art groups as well as tons of book sellers and collectors.
February 7 - 22 - Accordion folds - Hands on exploration and development of
ides for artists' books using the versatile form of the accordion fold. 9:30
to 4:00 Saturday.
$115.00 - nonmember fee/includes materials
February 21 - Beginning Pop Ups - Explore the intriguing and delightful pop
up structure for use in your books, cards, gifts, and art. 9:30 to 4:00
Saturday. $110.00 nonmember fee/includes materials.
February 27-Free lecture with Dayle Doroshow - 7:30 PM General meeting of
the Los Angeles Book Arts Center and lecture. Please visit our website,

February 28 and 29 - Dayle Doroshow - Exploring Polymer Clay - Learn to make
"ivory" covers with carved designs and intricate Xerox transfer images in
clay. Also create detailed molds from old jewelry and knickknacks. 9:30 to 4:00
Saturday and Sunday. $195.00 nonmember fee/includes materials.
March 6 and 7 - Keith Smith and Scott McCarney- Quick and Simple Quarter
Leather Binding - The Los Angeles Book Arts Center has brought these amazing book
artists to LA to show us how they do it, we still have a few spaces are left,
but there classes are filling fast. Join us for this unique opportunity to
learn from the masters. 9:30 to 4:00 Saturday and Sunday. $220.00 - nonmember
March 11 - Free Lecture with Keith Smith and Scott McCarney. Join us for an
enlightening evening with these gentlemen and learn about their visions and
book art. Thursday evening exact time and location to be determined, please

March 13 and 14 - Keith Smith and Scott McCarney - Non-Adhesive Binding - The
Los Angeles Book Arts Center has brought these amazing book artists to LA to
show us how they do it, we still have a few spaces are left, but there classes
are filling fast. Join us for this unique opportunity to learn from the
masters. 9:30 to 4:00 - Saturday and Sunday.

March 20 - Books Without Fear - This class will give you the courage to find
your voice in book art. Basic book binding and book art techniques will be
taught and you will make a number of easy books from junk mail. Prepare for a
fun day of art and recycling. 9:30 to 4:00 Saturday. $85.00 nonmember
fee/includes materials - but don't forget to bring your junk mail.
