It might also be celluloid.  It is by no means a reliable test, but if
white or cream in color, likely to be celluloid; if black or near black,
more likely to be Bakelite.  Bakelite also tends to be pretty rigid,
celluloid more flexible (depending on thickness)

I have before me a Victorian photo album that has that early pictorial
plastic convex cover. I seem to recall this has a special name, this
plastic. Anybody know?
