Review Peter's recent post on the clean pasting thread and in the
archives on similar topics. He discusses most clearly the need to
balance stresses on boards (and the role of experience with your
materials). In short, if pasting on one side curled the board, paste on
the other side to balance it.

caused all the corner areas to curve
upwards; is there anything that can be done to straighten this out? I
wondered if it might be helpful to perhaps glue something to the back
side.
