Re: [BKARTS] BOOK_ARTS-L Digest - 9 Feb 2004 to 10 Feb 2004 (#2004-38)

June-Etta,

When an endpaper is glued up, placed and dries, it will expand in the
direction opposite the grain, stick to the board and then shrink back. When
it does this, it pulls the board with it. If the cover board is flat before
the endpaper is applied, it will be bowed when the endpaper is dry. If you
know in advance that the endpaper will pull (bow) the board more than you
want it to, you can adjust the shape of the board before you apply the
endpaper. This can be done in a number of ways - using an adhesive with
little water to glue down interior board lining, not using an interior board
lining, using an adhesive with more water (paste) to glue down the exterior
board lining and/or cover material (paper, bookcloth.) Just keep in mind
that, when using an endpaper that will pull a lot, the object is to have a
board ready to apply the endpaper to that can afford the extra pull.
Depending on the stiffness of the board and the amount of extra pull, the
board may be just flat or even bowed out a little at the foredges.

Good luck,
Don Glaister
