Re: [BKARTS] seeking opinions on rare book

I offer an opinion about this dilemma from the perspective of being a
commercial bookbinder and, often frustrated, book collector.

Firstly, the boards that are currently part of this volume may or may
not be the originals - but for argument let's pretend they are.

There are those collectors who would want the volume just as it is,
perhaps boxed, to help retain all loose pieces that will continue to
fragment off the deteriorating boards.

There are probably many more who would want the volume in a restored,
displayable and usable and resalable condition.

My council is that if the volume is worth more in its current state,
keep it as it is and box it. If, on the other hand, it is unsalable
and unusable, even for display purposes, you may wish to consult with
a competent bookbinder or book restorer.

Samuel Johnsonís A Dictionary of the English Language:
In Which the Words Are Deduced from Their Originals,
1755, first edition, in two volumes.
The importance of this book and value is understood.
The spine is gone. The original leather boards are
attached, worn at the corners, exposing the boards.
As conservators, what would you do to this book?
Would you have it rebound? Is it more valuable left
as original? There are no definite rules, therefore I
ask your opinions. How would you proceed? Please
respond to the list. No personal emails. Thank you.
