This free evening series provides an introduction to works of individual
book artists for collectors and would-be collectors. Participants get an
introduction to works by contemporary book artists whom they may not be
familiar with and develop a capacity for close readings of artists¹ books.
Cynthia Imperatore, former catalogue reviewer for Califia Books, introduces
the work of one artist at each event, showing their books and describing the
artist¹s working style, mediums, themes, and textual and visual vocabulary.
Join us and broaden your knowledge of artists¹ books! Collectors of all
levels welcome.

March 19, 2004, 6:30 p.m.
Maureen Cummins, Inanna Press, New York
Cummins often draws inspiration from found materials, incorporating early
printed matter, such as old bank checks, stock ledger sheets, and
photographs?many rescued from a local NYC flea market?into exquisitely
crafted, letterpress editions. Through re-housing, replicating, or
overprinting the originals, this highly skilled artist penetrates
established forms, revealing the dark underside of social structures,
cultural institutions, and gender roles. Her work is sardonic, intelligent,
and illuminating. Maureen will be present at this event.

Look forward to seeing you there!
