Book Works: An exhibition of Queensland artists books by guest curator Helen Sanderson

Queensland artists? books are being showcased at an exhibition to be held at Craft Queensland Gallery March 26th ? April 3rd.

In a new initiative for Craft Queensland, independent curator Helen Sanderson has been invited to create a book works show.

Join us for an official opening by Executive Director Christine Ballinger and Curator Helen Sanderson Friday 26th, 6 - 8 pm CQgallery and store at 381 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley (Brisbane, Australia).

The books being shown range from the predictable book format of text and images on pages bound together with a cover, through a wide range of creative variations to those books that are purely sculptural objects.

In an age when technology is so widespread, artists have taken the centuries old notion of the well loved book and transformed it into a vehicle for intimate artistic expression. Artists? books can be made from the most exclusive papers or discarded material, and could use the oldest or newest methods of printmaking.

They can also use some of the most surprising materials, and the most innovative methods of putting pages together imaginable. Some of the works seduce you with their beauty and craftsmanship. Some make you laugh?some make you cry, and some are out to shock.

9.11 by Wim de Vos, is a transparent Perspex structure that is a reflective statement about the events that rocked the world in 2001. What started as a simple design structure evolved into an ethereally lit book that can be read in many ways.

Seven Degrees of Separation by Caitlin Sheedy is a magnificently crafted book of etchings. Adele Outteridge creates fascinating book objects through discarded materials from everyday life. Her Teabag Book, Bus Ticket Book and Envelope Book are wonderful sculptures that make us look at these everyday materials in a completely new light.
