[BKARTS] Stand and Deliver

Stand and Deliver: Engineering Sculpture into a Book Format opened at the
Brookfield (CT) Craft Center on April 11. Robert Dancik designed the
installation and Judith T. Russell coordinated the show for the Center. The
opening reception on April 18 attracted 15 of the artists with work in the
show and many members of the team that produced the catalog. Photos from
the reception can be seen by either clicking on the Stand and Deliver icon
at www.artistbooks.com, or by going directly to
www.artistbooks.com/snd/index.htm

The website also includes a list of the books on display, photos of the
prize winners, and the schedule for future showings around the United
States.

Book arts organizations that would like to add spice to their programs
should check out the list of workshops taught by exhibiting artists.

There is an unusual catalog that goes with the show. The catalog is
basically a paper sleeve folded in half. When opened, show information
explodes on a pop-up starburst in the center. At the same time two booklets
are pushed out of the right and left sides. One booklet has an
introduction, background statements by several participating artists, color
photos, and an interactive CD. The other booklet has color photos and short
descriptions of all 52 books in the show. Kyle Olmon was the paper
engineer, John DiLorenzo did the page layouts, Genie Shenk was the editor,
and Julie Sadler designed the CD.

The catalog can be purchased from any of the sponsoring organizations or by
sending a check made out to "Stand and Deliver" for $26.29 (postpaid) to
Stand and Deliver, PO Box 624, Mt Vernon NY 10552.

An important part of the show is the insightful essay written by Martha
Carothers in the current issue of Artists' Books Reviews. The essay is
illustrated with nine color photos of books from the show. One of the
photos, in true Joe D'Ambrosio fashion, really does stand and deliver.

I understand that there will be another article, this one by Genie Shenk,
with more photos in the next issue of Tabellae Ansatae.

Stand and Deliver will be on display at the Brookfield Craft Center until
June 6. The show then goes to San Diego Mesa College from September 7 to
October 7. The reception on September 30 will be in conjunction with the
Movable Book Society conference. In 2005 the show will travel to Florida
Atlantic University, the Denver Public Library, and the Chicago Center for
Book and Paper Arts.

Please come see these amazing books, visit the show online, or experience
the show through the innovative catalog.
