Vernon,

I think sunken cords were still for speed, even though it had little to do
with high speed printing. The bookbinder had to pay his help and they could get
more done for less pay, in the sewing, which was quicker and guaranteed that
all section would be put on properly and quicker for the bookbinder who no
longer had to work the leather down over the cords; another time consuming
project.
