Because the meaning here is increase over time, not progress through time. Think of a molding hide. The more it molds, the more it will mold. You can measure negatives as well as positives. Mold is the physical evidence of deterioration. As it progresses, there's less clean leather, but more moldy leather. Things that deteriorate do not necessarily result in less volume or surface area. They don't disappear. They transmute.
