* Beginning Letterpress (6 sessions)

This popular introductory course offers a thorough survey of hand
typesetting and presswork. Learn the basics of setting type by hand and
rudimentary design skills, while gaining an understanding of the Vandercook
proof press. You will design and print a small form and then produce a small
edition with text of your choice. This class is appropriate for beginners
and more experienced students who wish to refine their skills.

* THE ULTIMATE, FLEXIBLE LITTLE BLACK BOOK

Color meets black to set the stage for a dynamic book that bends both ways
at the knees. The first step is surface design on deep black paper using
paint, pastels, colored pencils and more, resulting in brilliant, rich
papers. Next, create one or more wire hinge books using black core board to
bind sculptural units together, all adorned with your colorfully decorated

* THE ACCIDENTIAL ARTIST'S BOOK

Need a jumpstart with content? Overwhelmed by the thought of filling pages
in your book? Or, do you just need some pointers on the form your book
should take? In this class you will participate in three, lightly guided
creativity exercises resulting in the "insides" of artists' books. During
the second half of class, you will make three different books (accordion
with pullout spine, one-page fold book and drum leaf binding) using the
pages from your exercises. Students with binding experience are encouraged
to make more complicated structures. Inks, colored pencils and stamps will
be provided, but you are welcome to bring any preferred drawing, painting or

* PAPER SURFACING WORKSHOP (2 sessions)
* Two Saturdays, June 19 and 26, 1 to 5 p.m.

This class provides not only the basics of sheet formation, but a variety of
decorative techniques as well. During the first session, students will learn
western sheet formation using cotton, abaca and flax fibers. The second
session will cover several embellishing techniques, including painting,
dying, leafing, waxing, stitching, stamping and beading. These working
methods can be used to create richly decorated stationery, collages and book
covers. Some techniques have sculptural applications as well. Wear casual
clothes and waterproof shoes.

Learn how to cut paper and book board quickly, efficiently and safely.
Through hands-on exercises you will learn the capabilities of each piece of
cutting equipment at MCBA, and upon successful completion of the class, you
will be able to rent the cutters for your own project use. This class is
required for anyone who wishes to use MCBA's cutting equipment. Choose one
of the convenient sessions listed above.

* BOXMAKING MADE EASY (2 sessions)
* Sat., June 26, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun., June 27, Noon to 5 p.m.
* Instructor - Jody Williams
This popular two-day workshop will focus on three boxes: a cube with a
fitted lid, a cigar-style box with a hinged lid and a portfolio box. Boxes
will be constructed from binder's board and covered with decorative paper.
This is a perfect workshop to learn or enhance your binding and boxmaking
skills. In addition, you will learn how to incorporate your skills into more
complicated structures and what to put inside your collection of boxes.
