Re: [BKARTS] Texas book arts events?

Dear Susan,

The Guld of Book Workers is a national, even international organization with
very active chapters in Texas and also the Midwest, 10 in all, covering most
of the country. In addition to the chapters, the national org. gives a
"Standards of Excellence Seminar" each autumn in a different place around
the U.S. This 2-1/2 day or 3 day, if you attend all the events, seminar
offers five 3-hour presentations by calligraphers, bookbinders (old, new,
cutting edge techniques), preservation and conservation specialists,
marblers, paper makers, and so on. Anybody distinguished in his/her field
within the book arts. On Thursday, the day before things start in ernest,
there is a "Foundation Session," a 3-hour presentation on basics. In the
past these have included: "Paste, Paper & Cloth," "Leather," "Color Theory
and Making your own book cloth," The origins of the Alphabet." The last two
"Standards" were in Minneapolis, Denver, and this year will be in
Providence. Next year, Portland, Oregon. It's a wonderful, exhausting,
event-filled time where you can meet old friends and make new ones.

In addition, dues-paying members receive a bimonthly newsletter with
articles on all manner of book works, and a calendar of events around the
country and in Europe and Canada. The Guild of Book Workers Journal is also
published approximately twice a year.

Subject: Texas book arts events?

I am very new to book arts and have read with interest postings about
book arts classes and events around the country. How can I find out more
about book arts activities in Texas, where I live, and the Midwest,
where I often travel?
Thanks.
Susan
