Save us from the French businessman. Bad enough in America, where so-called cultural institutions have become fronts for real-estate speculation. It’s worse in France, even, because there’s a whole echelon of the bureaucracy there that gets its ideas from old copies of the Wall Street Journal. Their fantasies would be nasty enough in an American context; in France they’re not even relevant.

Anyhow. The latest from Paris is an attempt to “privatize” one of the greatest typographic collections in the world, that of the Imprimerie Nationale, with reserves going back to the sixteenth century. You can read the details in English, and sign a petition, too:
