and Suminagashi classes. Join us and create your own treasures, perfect to
give away as a holiday gift or to keep for yourself.

Audience: Open to anyone interested in the beauty of paper and books.

Suminagashi Marbling Workshop
October 30th 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
GSLIS building, room 131
$39, includes some supplies
Instructor: Melinda McIntosh

Suminagashi, pronounced sue-me-nah-gah-she, literally means "spilled ink".
This ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks is believed to
be the oldest form of marbling, originating over 2,000 years ago. In
suminagashi marble-like designs are created by floating colored inks on water
and transferring them to absorbent paper or fabric. Given the natural flux of
water, it is impossible to fix or hold a specific pattern; therefore, each
decorative sheet is as beautiful as it is unique. This process is not only
fun, it can be addictive. In this workshop you will be able to create
decorative papers to cover boxes and books, make greeting cards and
stationary, and much more.

Collage Book 2004
November 6th 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
GSLIS building, room 131
$79, includes some supplies
Class size limited to 14.

Instructor: Bea Nettles (www.beanettles.com)

This sophisticated, but simple book structure gives you an opportunity to
synthesize some of the photographs, text, assorted papers and two-dimensional
items that you have accumulated this year. Five stocky pages will be created
covering them entirely with your collages. They will then be "perfect bound"
along one edge with a simple technique using a strip of Tyvek. The resultant
book is strong and opens flat. Indentations can be made for small 3-D objects
as well.
