[BKARTS] Temporary Part-time Mending Clerk, Circulating Collection, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York



Position:   Temporary Part-time Mending Clerk, Circulating Collection

Available: Immediately

Salary: $17/hour; 10-20 hours/week (daytime and/or evenings)

Description:      This position has responsibility for book repair of
the general circulating collections of the Libraries. Review and
evaluate books sent for repair, identifying the commercial or in-house
options for each item. Use technical expertise and independent judgment
to specify treatment from within those categories.

Duties include:  Performing book binding hinge repairs (tightening
hinges, re-gluing cover to text, hollow tubes, new end sheet and/or
super, re-backing, re-casing, recording text-blocks, repair of broken
sewing, sewing or wire stapling pamphlets into pamphlet binders, drill
and sewing for temporary use materials, side stapling temporary use
paperbacks); performing book repair-text-block treatment (tipping in
pages, hinging in pages, plates, or foldouts, hinging or tipping in
pockets, photocopying replacement leaves, inserting reference plates);
construct new bindings in various styles and materials, maintain monthly
production statistics; monitoring use of supplies and notifying building
manager when low; maintaining tools, equipment and workspace in clean
and workable condition.

Qualifications:   Required:  Prior experience in book repair through
work in a library or an equivalent setting; demonstrated ability and
skill to work knowledgeably and independently on a variety of binding
styles and structures, and in performing a variety of book and paper
repair techniques; ability perform routine repairs with speed and
accuracy.

Applicants will be asked to provide a portfolio or examples of previous
book repair work.
