Betty,

You might consider using a split-board with supported joint; it would be
solid enough for a book of this size but still allow a groove for the
cloth. The thickness of the two boards should equal the depth of the
shoulder. The inner board is cut wide enought to fit into the shoulder
and is attached with the slips. The outer board is cut narrower and
laminated to the inner, forming the groove.
