POETRY & THE PRINT:
WRITE HAIKU AND PRINT A BROADSIDE
Tuesday Evenings, 5 sessions
1/25-2/22, 6-9 pm
Dates: January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22
Working with a poet and visual artist, create a small
edition broadside. Broadsides, poster-like prints,
have a long history. Its uses have been modified and
expanded in contemporary art practices. In this
workshop you will combine text and image on a single
page. Students will write haiku under the inspiration
of the poet for 2 sessions. Then, working with the
visual artist, you will learn to typeset your haiku
poem using metal foundry type, and have the option of
combining it with illustration. The broadside will be
printed as a 2-color edition in letterpress, which
renders beautiful impressions.

BLOCKPRINTING: LINOCUT
One weekend day: 10am-4pm
Session A: Saturday, January 23 or
Session B: Sunday, February 27
Create a print with linoleum blocks. Learn this relief
process to create a plate for a print edition. You
will design and transfer your image, get tips on
carving your block, and print an impression in perfect
registration. An introduction to the Vandercook
includes lock-up, press adjustment, inking,
make-ready, and trouble shooting on the press.
Students should bring a selection of simple drawings
or photographs they would like to translate to a
plate.

PRINTING WITHOUT A PRESS:
COMBINING TEXT AND IMAGE
One weekend day: 10am-4pm
Session A: Saturday, January 29 or
Session B: Sunday, February 19
Print a small book edition using block printing and
stamping. Experience creating and designing your
image, transferring the image, planning the printing
sequence, carving a soft block, and printing it by
hand with a brayer and waterbased inks. Each letter
of text will be set in rubber fonts. Collage elements
will be encouraged. This is an introduction to book
arts, as you think about ways of combining text and
image, work out narrative sequencing, and begin to
learn the process of creating a small edition book.
All aspects of this low-tech printshop can be
re-created at home. Students should bring a selection
of simple drawings or photographs they would like to
translate to a plate, and a short poem or prose piece
to set in type.

THE ARTIST'S BOOK: MINIATURE BOOK EDITION
Weekend Instensive, Friday 6-8pm, Saturday & Sunday
10-4
Session A: February 4, 5, 6 or
Session B: April 15, 16, 17
In this weekend intensive, print an accordion edition
in the tradition of the illustrated book, using
linoleum block printing and handset type. Learn all
phases of creating and printing an image: how to
design an image, plan the printing sequence, transfer
the image, cut the block, and mix inks. In the manner
of 15th century printing a la Gutenberg, you will set
your poem or short prose in metal foundry type. Image
and text will be printed on the letterpress in two
colors. You will leave class with a completed
artist?s book in an edition of 10.

VALENTINES TO YOUR "X"
One weekend day 10am-4pm
Sunday, February 13
For men and women with a sense of humor and bit a of
bite, creatively work through emotions from a past
flame. We will read a selection of love poems and
sonnets, write funny or angry notes or your own love
poems, or send sexy secrets to X?s. We?ll combine our
writing with painting, collage, and prints, and talk
about cultural voodoo-type rituals, gaining spiritual
insight, and incorporating healing symbols into our
work. Class will end with a purging of our demons in a
symbolic poem-burning/cleansing ritual. Bring things
you want to get rid of - your anger, old photographs,
amulets, love letters, journal writing. Just don?t
forget your Buddhist bells and your good humor!

REGISTRATION IS ON NOW for January through April 2005
You may register by mail, or reserve a place by e-mail
