Re: [BKARTS] a restoration question?

well, i'm still an amateur because i've only bound in one style, and then
only bound about 10 books total. i did rebind/repair a couple of this
friend's sketchbooks, but that was really a different thing altogether.
the sketchbooks could be changed, and in one case i completely changed the
way the spine looked as well as the outer cover/boards, and it was fine
with her. this sounds like the signatures may be ripped/coming out and
I'm not sure how to handle that if it's not an obviously easy resewing
fix.

This sounds more like a book that shouldn't be changed notably from it's
original style and binding. i do plan on taking a look at it, and will
judge then, but no, i'm not confident enough in my work to say that i
could repair it myself.

i'm still an amateur because i took binding up as a hobby. Although I
enjoy it quite a bit, i've still got the day job taking up a lot of my
time. that's one of the reasons i love this list so much -- i can look
through the history of it and find answers to questions and different
ideas on how to do different things.

hrm... hope that all made sense.

Kristen,

Just out of curiosity, how did you determine without
ever seening the book that you are capable of doing a
proper job. If you are confident enough about your
work that you can take for granted that you can do it;
why are you still an amatuer?

hey everyone,

i've had a friend contact me regarding a book that
she wants
restored/repaired. i haven't seen it yet, but from
the way she talks
about it -- had it since she was too young to
remember, it's in need of
repair, out of print and she can't find it anywhere
-- i don't think it's
the kind of thing that is out of my league as an
amateur bookbinder.

can anyone recommend someone to talk to in the SF
bay area to get this
done? i haven't seen it yet, as i said, and so i
don't know what to
expect. i'm going to contact the SF Center for the
Book tomorrow.

any other ideas? thanks!
