Mechanical removal of the label is much the better route, as several folks
have said.  For the last layer and the adhesive, try switching to a crepe
square which is less likely to scratch into the vellum surface.  You may
notice a color difference in the area under the label from the surrounding
surface area due to the difference in light exposure.  There isn't much you
can do about that, but if the label wasn't on all that long perhaps this
problem won't arise.
