[BKARTS] Lecture on The Himalayan Book (San Francisco)

At the San Francisco Center for the Book on Friday Jan 13, 2006, 7pm:
The Survival and Evolution of the Book in Tibet by Jim Canary

With video clips and slides we will explore the art of the book in the
Himalayan region. This is an opportunity to see a rich tradition including
papermaking, calligraphy and printing of Buddhist sacred texts. We will
also see how the books are used in the monasteries and how they are being
preserved in the East and in the West.

Jim Canary is Special Collections Conservator at Indiana University,
Bloomington, Indiana and adjunct faculty in the Henry Hope School of Fine
Arts teaching Book Structures. He began studying Tibetan language and
culture in the early 70's and has traveled extensively in the Himalayan
region researching papermaking and documenting papermakers, scribes and
printers. He is a member of the Paper Road Tibet project working to
research and revitalize traditional paper making in Tibet, and also works
with the International Tibetan Archive Preservation Project in Lhasa
carrying out conservation work and training. Currently, Jim is caretaker
and exhibition escort for the scroll manuscript of Jack Kerouac's On the
Road which is housed at the Lilly Library. For the next several years, Jim
will be traveling with the scroll while the fragile 120-foot document is on
its international tour.
