1) Benson, John Howard. THE FIRST WRITING BOOK: ARRIGHI?S OPERINA. (Second study in the History of Calligraphy, Harvard College & Newberry Libraries). New Haven: Yale U. Press, (1954) 1966. Paperback. Clean text (except for some black marking used to cover an earlier price on the title page); binding tight. About an inch of paper cover chipped away from lower spine. A good used copy. All calligraphers should have this photographic reprint of a famous and influential classic. $3.00


2) 1978 CALLIGRAPHER?S ENGAGEMENT CALENDAR. NY: Society of Scribes, P.0. Box 933, [1977]. A plastic-bound calendar, unmarked; almost new. Hand lettered throughout, with fine specimens by modern calligraphers. $4.00

3) THE CALLIGRAPHER?S ENGAGEMENT CALENDAR 1983. A Pentalic Book. NY: Taplinger Publishing Company, Published for the Society of Scribes, Ltd., 1982. A wire-bound calendar, unmarked; almost new. Hand lettered throughout, with fine specimens by modern calligraphers. $4.00

4) [Exhibition catalogue] JOHANNES GUTENBERG 1400-1468: EL ARTE DE IMPRIMIR TRANSFORMA EL MUNDO / DIE DRUCKKUNST VERANDERT DIE WELT. Stuttgart, Germany [1969?]. This bilingual catalogue contains brilliant reproductions in black and white of striking examples of Gutenberg?s typography as well as period engravings on most of its 128 pages. Some marking on spine and at top of the front paper cover. Later chapters illustrate developments in typography from the sixteenth century to the present. $7.00

5) Fairbank, Alfred. A BOOK OF SCRIPTS. Harmondsworth, England: Penguin Books, 1949. Paper-covered boards, with some chipping at top and bottom of spine. No d/j. Except for owner?s inscription and date on flyleaf, the pages are clean and unmarked. Fine examples of writing from the second to the twentieth century, A.D.; 64 plates and other illustrations. $2.00

6) Fairbank, Alfred. A HANDWRITING MANUAL. NY: Watson-Guptill Publications, 1975. Soft-covers; tight and clean; completely unmarked. $3.00

7) Gill, Cecil; Beatrice Warde and David Kindersley. THE LIFE AND WORKS OF ERIC GILL. Papers read at a Clark Library Symposium, 22 April 1967. Los Angeles: University of California, Los Angeles, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, 1968. Contains Beatrice Warde?s essay, ?Eric Gill, Typographer.? A 72-page paper-covered tribute to Eric Gill. Paper covers beginning to brown somewhat, but the text is clean and tight. $5.00

11) THE JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR ITALIC HANDWRITING. 35 issues (no. 32 to no. 78, with gaps), published between Autumn 1962 and Spring 1974. $5.00 for all 35 issues.

12) Kushner, Lawrence. THE BOOK OF LETTERS: A MYSTICAL ALEF-BAIT. NY: Harper & Row, 1975. Hardback, with good dust jacket. Discusses mystical meanings associated with letters of the Hebrew alphabet, with Kushner?s own calligraphy throughout. $4.00

13) Lehner, Ernest. ALPHABETS AND ORNAMENTS. NY: Dover Publications, Inc., 1968. A black-and-white reprint of the original 1952 edition. Dimensions, 28.5 X 21.5 mm.; soft-covered with scuff marks on front cover and numbers marked on and near the top of the spine. Binding is firm and interior pages are unmarked and clean, with not even an owner?s signature. $15.00

14) Morris, William. A BOOK OF VERSE. A facsimile in color of the manuscript written in 1870 by William Morris. NY: Distributed by Crown Publishers, Inc. for Clarkson N. Potter, Inc./Publishers, 1980. First American edition. Hardcover with good dust jacket; text is unmarked and tight throughout. Fine example of Morris?s lettering and decorative art. $5.00

15) Meynell, Francis. ENGLISH PRINTED BOOKS. London: Collins, 1948. Very good condition, with 8 plates in color and 21 plates in black and white. Dust jacket has one small chip, at top back. Dozens of copies are listed on bookfind, but none at such a low price. $2.00

16) Ongania, Ferdinando. EARLY VENETIAN PRINTING ILLUSTRATED. Venice: Ferdinando Ongania, 1895. Title is stamped in red and black on the top cloth board. Quarto, 228 pp., with many facsimiles of type specimens in red and black. Errata slip is tipped in. Pages beginning to brown at edges, but this book is well preserved. Slight fraying of cloth at top and bottom of spine. A marvelous resource for typographers, artists and art departments. This book is sometimes attributed to Carlo Castellani, whose essay ?The Art of Printing at Venice during the Italian Renaissance? appears on pp. 9-16 in this volume. $40.00

17) THREE CLASSICS OF ITALIAN CALLIGRAPHY: ARRIGHI, TALIENTE AND PALATINO. With an introduction by Oscar Ogg. NY: Dover Publications Inc., 1953. Photographic reprints of three masterpieces of sixteenth-century Italian calligraphy, Binding tight, and all pages are clean and unmarked. In very good condition, for a fifty-year-old paperback. $4.00

18) Updike, Daniel Berkeley. PRINTING TYPES: THEIR HISTORY, FORMS, AND USE. Two volumes. Cambridge, MA: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 1966. Very good condition with two very good dust jackets. $8.00 the set

19) Ullman, Berthold Louis. ANCIENT WRITING AND ITS INFLUENCE. Cambridge, MA: M.I.T. Press, 1969. Intro. by Julain Brown. Paperback; ex library copy with usual stampings; first published in 1932. Owner?s signature on front flyleaf; otherwise the text is clean and the binding is firm. $2.00

20) Van Moé, Emile-A. THE DECORATED LETTER FROM THE VIIIth TO THE XIIth CENTURY. Paris: Editions du Chêne, 1950. The hardcover is soiled from years of use by a practicing artist and letterer. Top hinge is beginning to crack. Dimensions: 12.5 X 9.5 inches. Richly illustrated, with many color plates tipped in. The text is translated from the original French. $8.00

21) Whalley, Joyce Irene. ENGLISH HANDWRITING 1540-1853: AN ILLUSTRATED SURVEY BASED ON MATERIAL IN THE NATIONAL ART LIBRARY, VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM. London: Her Majesty?s Stationery Office, 1969 This stunning book, 14.75" wide X 11" high, is well preserved with a dust jacket in good condition (its main flaw being the two letters that a previous owner inscribed at the top of the dust jacket where it covers the spine). The author, Joyce Whalley, was a Senior Research Assistant at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the 1970s and thus had privileged access to that institution?s remarkable collection of calligraphy and early writing and writing implements. The book has over ninety reproductions and is invaluable for anyone studying the development of writing styles in British culture. A new copy of this book cost five pounds when it was published in 1969. $25.00
