depart Tuesday, August 8)

An artist?s book is a container--an object full of words, images,
collections and patterns. Its contents may change during its assembly,
and the container itself--the book?s shape, size or binding--may change
to match its contents. The artist?s book is also a portable container.
It is a carry-on item that can facilitate any journey--a walk down
memory lane, your exploration of Assisi, a flight of fancy, or a
connection between common things. In this class we will explore the
unlimited potential of movable artist?s books?books that travel well
from hand-to-hand as well as place to place?books that fold, flutter,
fly, flip, pop, spin, spring and expand. We will start with simple
folded accordions and move into glued flag structures, sewn
spring-bindings, intricate Jacob?s ladders and fun pop-up books
incorporating found boxes and bags. Throughout, you will be encouraged
to explore your own ideas for how each book may both accompany and
record a journey. Classes will include walks through Assisi to look for
found materials and inspiration. No previous art experience is


Rachel Melis received her BA at Grinnell College and her MFA at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. She currently teaches book arts,
visual communication and two-dimensional design at Kansas State
University, where she is an Assistant Professor. Her work has been
exhibited in national and international juried shows including ?Cover
to Cover? at the Maryland Federation of Art, Washington, D.C.; ?Book +
Art = ?? at the Core New Art Space, Denver, CO; and the Third Annual
North American Book Arts Exhibition at Bright Hill Center, Treadwell,
NY. Several of her books are currently on display at:
