Re: [BKARTS] Paul Johnson comes to NYC area

Hi Ed,
I've been meaning to write and thank you for sending Paul our way, here's my chance. He did two wonderful workshops and a great presentation for us, everyone really enjoyed his visit and learned lots. And he's such a nice person; I remember that you had great enthusiasm about him and respect for his work, now I see why!
Hope all is going well for you. Best, Genie

Paul Johnson, internationally-known book artist, teacher, and author, is coming to the New York City area for the first time. He will be presenting two exciting hands-on workshops for book artists at all levels. Details can be downloaded at www.artistbooks.com or by calling (914) 663-9366.

Saturday, April 8, 10 am to 4:30 pm, A BOX OF FIREWORKS -- Add a Splash of Spice, Snap, and Sizzle to Your Handmade Books. No one can wrest more surprise from a few pieces of paper than Paul Johnson can. This class starts with participants making a paper origami box. Then you’ll construct an extending pop-up book that ‘grows’ out of the box. As you lift the book, pages pop out from the sides like a pyrotechnic display! It’s great fun to make and, amazingly, requires only paper, scissors and glue. A workshop of terrific fun.

Sunday, April 9, 10 am to 4:30 pm, MAKING MOVABLE EDITIONS: Multiple Section Books -- Learn How to Share Your Ideas in Imaginative and Innovative Ways. The workshop begins by constructing a classic 180° foundation form as a template and exploring the many themes – boxes, houses, boats, flying craft – that can be processed from it. We will investigate 3-D designs as flat shapes that can be photo-copied, cut out and assembled as an editioned movable book. As Paul Johnson says, ‘This way, you can keep your original pop-up and give copies to friends as well!’

The cost of one workshop is $110 and includes instruction, materials & lunch, or $200 for both workshops. There is free parking or free transfer from the North White Plains MetroNorth Train Station. Advance registration is required. Classes will be filled on first-come, first-served basis. A waiting list is likely–please reserve your space as soon as possible. For more information call (914) 663-9366 or go to www.artistbooks.com

Paul Johnson is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in developing literacy through the book arts and as a paper engineer and book artist. Author of over fifteen titles including A Book of One's Own, Literacy Through the Book Arts and Pictures and Words Together, (all Heinemann, USA), he ran until recently the Book Art Project from Manchester Metropolitan University. His movable books are in the collections of the Cooper-Hewett Museum in New York, the National Gallery, the Library of Congress, the University of California at Berkeley and Yale University, among other institutions. His work was selected for Stand and Deliver--an exhibition of editioned movable books that has been touring the USA. He exhibits widely and is on the UK Craft Council's select list of British designer-makers.
