Re: [BKARTS] Dissolving Books

Very interesting project!

I would like to add my thoughts on the matter of the spiral bound
books. Perhaps this sort of binding might be frowned upon in the
bookarts world, but if you look closely at the assignments that were
spiral bound, you might see how it works with the ideas of the
assignment. I particularly am drawn to Eryn Hunt's "Ex-Boyfriend
Yearbook". After seeing each jpg., I got a feeling of being back in
school again, a place where young girls would "catalogue" guys under
titles such as "jock" (such as Hunt did) . I furthermore got this
feeling with the illustrations, color choice and scrap-book feel of the
pages. Even the term "yearbook" is one that conjures up images of high
school or college; thus making the book spiral bound would resemble that
of a class notebook. Whether the binding was a conscious decision or
not, I think it does work in this case.

It goes to show how much artist's book and projects that could fall
under that title are really a challenge to the mind. At first glance,
it's perplexing and sometimes we are put off by certain decisions (which
started this discussion on the listserv). But really doing an all-out
analysis is the true way to see what works and what doesn't, what
fascinates us and what leaves us still saying "Hmm.."

Best,
Jill
