[BKARTS] Overly Soft Calfskin

Hi, All.
Since Pearce tannery closed their doors, I've been trying out various substitute leathers. I recently used some expensive German calf from Harcourt and Continental calf from Talas, and they feel as though they're from the same supplier. The leather is great for paring and tooling, but is so soft that it shows every little bump or scrape.
Are there other calfskins you'd recommend for their hardness? If you've used Pearce skins, that's the sort of ideal I'm after for recreating historical styles.
