PETER WATERS - MASTER BOOKBINDER

Sheila Waters shares her late husband Peter’s development as a binder prior
to his worldwide leadership in library
conservation, 1940’s art school prodigy to 1960’s masterful
designer-bookbinder, discussing their unique 50 year
collaborative relationship and showing Peter’s bindings from her private
collection.

Peter Waters (1930-2003) has been dubbed the “Father of American library
conservation.” His leadership in this
field began with the setting up of the restoration system in the National
Library of Florence (BNCF) after the
disastrous flood of 1966. This was folllowed in 1971 by designing the new
laboratory for conservation at the Library
of Congress, Washington, DC, emigrating from England with his family and
becoming Chief of Conservation at LOC
for the next twenty-four years. To quote Nicolas Barker: “Peter was
single-mindedly devoted to the understanding of
book structures, bent on devising new and original ways of repairing and
preserving them... becoming a world
authority.”

Peter’s knowledge and innovative abilities came from his training as a
designer-bookbinder under William Matthews
at Guildford College of Art in Surrey, then under Roger Powell at the Royal
College of Art. Whilst a student there he
met his future wife, Sheila Salt (who was later to become a world-renowned
calligrapher). Peter and Sheila were
married in 1953. and Peter and Roger Powell were partners from 1955 to
1971, restoring and repairing many ancient
manuscripts and designing and making fine bindings for collectors.

This DVD concentrates upon Peter Waters’s early bookbindings. It is an
informal presentation narrated by his widow,
Sheila Waters, without script or rehearsal, with remarkable fluency,
clarity and insight. She shows and discusses all
of his student bindings from the age of fourteen, to several sophisticated
exhibition bindings still in her private
collection. Many other bindings are also shown, in photographs, designs and
preparatory drawings, demonstrating
the close design collaboration of the couple in bookbinding, hand lettering
and illustration throughout their fifty
years together.

This presentation, beautifully produced by broadcast professional David
Swerdloff, aided by his wife Lorraine
Swerdloff, will delight all who are interested in the art of fine binding
and lettering.
