[BKARTS] MCBA Day of the Dead Contest

LAST CALL FOR MCBA¹S ³DAY OF THE DEAD² POSTCARD CONTEST!

PLEASE FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED

Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) is a celebration of the memory of
deceased ancestors, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. The origins of the
celebration can be traced back to the indigenous peoples of the Americas,
such as the Aztec, Maya, Purepecha, Nahual and Totonac. Today, despite the
morbid subject matter, the holiday is celebrated joyfully. On these dates,
families clean and decorate graves, build shrines, and provide offerings and
trinkets of flowers and loved ones¹ favorite foods. A common symbol of the
holiday is the skull, which celebrants represent in masks, called calacas.
In recent years, the vibrant colors, symbols and decorations associated with
Día de los Muertos have become increasingly visible in popular art. To
celebrate this festival, Minnesota Center for Book Arts is sponsoring a
postcard contest, with all entries to be displayed from September 19
November 12, 2006 in the Open Book Lobby Gallery.

The rules are simple:

1. Create a postcard using any media collage, painting, drawing, sewing,
printmaking, photography, computer imagery or any other artistic method of
communication.

2. The subject matter should reflect the traditions and art that are
associated with Día de los Muertos. For more information, check out
www.azcentral.com/ent/dead.

3. Postcards must be exactly 4 inches by 6 inches. Entries that do not meet
this requirement will not be displayed.

4. Mail postcards to:

Día de los Muertos
Minnesota Center for Book Arts
1011 Washington Ave S Ste 100
Minneapolis, MN 55415

If the card has dimensional elements or a fragile surface, please enclose
the card in an envelope to protect it during mailing.

5. Artists may submit more than one card.

6. Cards must be received by September 15, 2006.

Five winners will be chosen and their cards will be professionally
reprinted. Each winner will receive 100 reproductions of their card. Sets
of the winners¹ cards will be available for sale in The Shop @ MCBA, with
proceeds supporting future artist programming. All submitted cards will
become the property of MCBA and will not be returned. If you have additional
questions, email Jeff Rathermel at jrathermel@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
