I'd be more concerned about what the spiders are finding to eat. If they weren't getting an adequate diet they would move on. Have you checked to see what is in their webs? if there is any standing water nearby would attract flies, etc. 
There are pesticide chemicals that will damage both paper and metals, depending on what's used, we're currently phosphining (sp?) some items but had to make sure there weren't any pure copper, gold or some other metals involved. 
If you are using a company like PCO or Orkin, they should be able to tell you what any risks are.
