I spray it with a light, fine mist on both sides of the paper at the kink
and maybe half an inch on either side...

I typically mist it on the backside (I use gouache and don't want to mist on the front side), then weigh it down with board and bricks, but I find that the crease never completely goes away. The paper will lie flat after this treatment, but if you know where to look, you can still see the the effects of the crease. It's like the paper has a scar from it. If ironing will actually get rid of this effect, that'd be great; I'll have to try that.
