THE DOUBLE ESCAPE, an adventure of the Salem schooner FOX in the war of 1812
Researched, Written, and Illustrated
by David Hodgdon, The Laureate Press,
printed at Florence MA by KatRan Press.
After a century and a half,  a working man’s narrative of the American war at sea in 1812 has been given an hommage
it deserves. Letterpressed and fitted with slipcase and 14 etchings, the sea-level view of the British blockade of shipping in the Delaware takes on a quirky and authentic immediacy.  Letters home by a Salem schooner master captured twice, once his voyage to Philadelphia from Massachusetts and again trying to run with a cargo of flour into wintry Atlantic, 6 December 1813.
The main text is from a family manuscript, believed to be an ancestor’s memoir as a Crowninshield apprentice, it was headed for the trashbin. In fact, The Double Escape has a unique and authentic period flavor. Original research by the narrator’s descendant, lies behind text notes; episodes are illustrated by excerpts from the Royal Navy logbooks recounting the events and historically accurate line drawings by the editor.
Printed on Zerkall Bugra in Bixler Baskerville monotype, the edition of 65 copies is bound by Lisa von Pelt of Easthampton MA, who tipped in the 8 offset facsimile pages by Oxbow Press and built the handsome cloth covered slipcases to hold the 70 pages of a dense substantial casebound book, 3/4 x  14 in. x 17 in.
