[BKARTS] Aesthetics in Conservation: A lecture by Gary Frost, November 3 at Syracuse University Library

The Brodsky Endowment for the Advancement of Library Conservation is
pleased to present

The Aesthetics of Conservation: A lecture by Gary Frost
Educator in Book Conservation and the Book Arts at the University of
Iowa Libraries

When: Friday November 3 at 4 p.m.
Where: The Peter Graham Scholarly Commons, 1st floor of E. S. Bird
Library, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY

"Of all the artful approaches to the book, the art of the book
conservator is particularly obscure. It is an enclave art with a
peculiar finesse for the handle and appearance of historical craft work
and a stylistic sensitivity to cultures and book environments across
time. Supple and protective book action, a graceful and muted
appearance and a wily feel for hand craft qualities are all aesthetic
features of successful book conservation treatment. In this lecture Gary
Frost will explore this subtle art and the quiet passions of the book
conservator."

Gary Frost is an educator in book art and book conservation. He has
taught at the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago, Columbia University in New York, and the
University of Texas at Austin. He is currently the Conservator for the
Libraries at the University of Iowa, and has been awarded the 2006
Banks/Harris Preservation Award by the ALCTS Division of the American
Library Association. For more information see his website Future of the
Book.com, which also features many of his writings on the history of the
book, reading, library preservation, and a host of other issues.

The lecture is sponsored by the Brodsky Endowment for the Advancement
of Library Conservation. The Brodsky Endowment sponsors programs that
promote and advance knowledge of library conservation theory, practice,
and application to wide audiences, both on the Syracuse University
campus and in the Central New York region. We look forward to your
attendance at this event.
