[BKARTS] John Fass & the Hammer Creek Press

There's still time to see the current exhibition in Multnomah County
Library's John Wilson Special Collections (Portland, OR):

"A Printer's Holiday: Christmas Greetings from John Fass & the Hammer
Creek Press"

Fine press printers enjoy the holidays even more than the rest of us
because they can show off their talents by designing and printing
wonderful holiday greetings cards. From its extensive Book Arts
collection, the John Wilson Special Collections is exhibiting a rare
group of 24 beautiful hand-printed Christmas cards (c. 1950-1961) by
John Fass, along with several books from his Hammer Creek Press. All of
the work from the Press was printed in a one-room apartment at the Bronx
YMCA, and was virtually unknown until the Grolier Club organized an
exhibition in Manhattan in 1962.

The Hammer Creek Press was born in 1950 when Fass acquired a small iron
press which had spectacular pedigree. Fass bought it from the
extraordinary Valenti Angelo (who illustrated a number of Hammer Creek
Press titles, including the illustration of a turtle-the ubiquitous icon
for the press-in _The Hammer Creek Press Type Specimen Book_ [1954]);
Angelo had acquired the press from the esteemed book designer, Bruce
Rogers (who had acquired it from Emery Walker, a partner of William
Morris at the Kelmscott Press).

John Fass (who died in 1973) was known for his extraordinary typography;
for his cards he varied designs using type ornaments, typefaces and wood
engravings, including those by the great John DePol (1913-2004), whose
prints are seen throughout the books and on a number of the cards. Many
of the books, along with the entire collection of cards, were part of
John DePol's personal collection acquired by the library last year with
gift funds.

The exhibition closes on December 29th. For more information contact
