[BKARTS] Artists' Book exhibition opens at the Free Library of Philadelphia 12/15/06

Jump Start: Launching an Artists' Book Collection at the Free Library of
On Friday, December 15th a new exhibit entitled Jump Start: Launching an
Artists' Books Collection opens on the 2nd floor at the Central Library,
1901 Vine Street. The exhibition takes place in the cases in the
corridors outside the Art Department and the Print and Picture
Collection. A reception will be held in the Print and Picture
Collection from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. The reception is open to the public
and you're all invited to attend. We'll open the cases during the
reception so that most of the books will be able to be read (with clean
hands or white gloves). Food and Drink will be restricted to the Print &
Picture Collection.

Recently, a collection of 60 artists' books was donated to the Print and
Picture Collection. As a follow up, the donor challenged the
Philadelphia book arts community to match that donation with works of
their own. The Philadelphia Center for the Book, a local organization of
artists working in the book arts, partnered with the Print and Picture
Collection on this project: preparing the prospectus, advertising to the
community, and helping jury the submissions. The art community
responded and this exhibit of 30 books from 20 artists is the result of
the challenge to date. Artists include Katie Baldwin, Teresa Bonaddio,
Dee Collins, Lauren DeMille, Erin Elman, James Engelbart, Feehan
Hammock, Monica Kane, Hedi Kyle, Michael Neff, Tara O'Brien, Caitlin
Perkins, Mary Phelan, Rosae Reeder, Jude Robison, Mimi Shapiro, Patty
Smith, Eriko Takahashi, Susan Viguers, Elysa Voshell, and Michelle

The exhibition dates are December 15, 2006 - February 3, 2007. The
exhibition may be viewed during normal Library hours, which are:
9-9 Mon-Wed, 9-5 Thu-Sat, and 1-5 Sunday.

All best wishes,
