[BKARTS] Designer Bookbinders teach master classes in New York City

Bookbinders from the U.K , will be giving master
classes in New York City , between April 16th through
the 22nd .The classes are as follows 

(Monday 16TH 10-4    $200 

Introduction to using gold leaf on leather, paper and

This one day work shop explores three techniques for
applying gold leaf to a variety of different materials
using traditional and innovative methods.

(tuesday 17th 10-4 $200

Contemporary practises for edge decoration. The
workshop members  are introduced and will be
encouraged to decorate the edges of a text block using
a variety of contemporary practises. 

Wednesday 18th 10-4 $200

Karibari is a traditional Japanese Drying Board.This
equipment is very useful for making paper backed
fabric,  stretched paper and some conservation works.
Students will construct Karibari that use traditional
methods with modern  materials.
After this practical workshop, the tutor will give a 
demonstration of the use of the "karibari" ,  pasting
a paper backing onto papers or fabric - a tradional
method called "urauchi"

THE HAKO CHITSU with a built-in box .
Thursday 19th 10-4 $200

This style of box case provides ideal storage 
and display for the various sizes and shapes of books
and papers.Students will construct the box using
sevral traditional japanese methods  materials and

Saturday 21st - Sunday 22nd 10-4 $400

Starting with end papers, students will learn a new
method  forwarding that does not involve sewing on
tapes . Techniques covered included "Secondary Sewing"
, a new hollow construction called the 3/4 Hollow  ,
Leather jointed endpapers , and full linen board
attachment . This work shop is intended for book
binders with some experience.

The classes are offered at the new Paper Dragon
Bindery in Chelsea , and are accompanied by an
exhibition of Studio 5, London .

Instructor Biographies

Born in Lincoln, 1964. Mark studied bookbinding at
Guildford College of Technology -
Diploma in Fine Bookbinding & Conservation and London
College of Printing - B A (Hons ) Book arts and
Opening his first studio in Lincoln in 1992 and Studio
Five (London) in 2003.  
Mark works in fine contemporary bookbinding, book
arts, restoration and teaches 
various aspects of bookbinding / book arts in Studio
Five, the U K , Europe, U S A  
and has been a visiting tutor at Joshibi University
(Japan) since 1994. 
Awards 1992 &1995~2000 Designer Bookbinders
Competition (British Library U.K.)
1992  1st Prize for Bookbinding-Stationers Company and
Zaehnsdorf Ltd  (U.K.)
Elected Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2001. He is
a member of The Society of Bookbinders (U.K.) and The
Tokyo Bookbinding Club (Japan).
Work held in public and private collections in the UK,
USA, Europe, Africa and Japan.


Born in Tokyo (Japan). Midori graduated the BA(Hons)
Academy of Arts, Joshibi University of Art and Design,
Tokyo. She studied binding at Bookbinding Studio Livre
in Tokyo and at Guildford College of Technology -
Diploma in Fine Bookbinding & Conservation ( U.K.).
Opening her studio in London, 1997.
Awards 1998 &2000~2003 Designer Bookbinders
Competition (British Library U.K.)
2002 The Second International Bookbinding Art Work
Exhibition in Italy selected among "100 Maestri
Rilegatori per Il Cantico Delle Creature" .
She undertakes commission work and private tuition.
She is a member of Designer Bookbinders (U.K.) ,The
Society of Bookbinders (U.K.) and The Tokyo
Bookbinding Club (Japan).
Work held in public and private collections in the UK,
Europe and Japan.
