[BKARTS] Workshop: Salt Lake City, UT

The Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library presents:

Finding Art in the Ordinary: A Book of Drawings
Instructors: Marie and Carl Dern
March 2nd and 3rd, Friday & Saturday, 9:00-5:00

This enlightened approach to looking deeply inspires people at all
levels of drawing experience and is especially good for those who think
that they cannot draw. Sew a multi-section, nonadhesive-bound drawing
book, and then produce a series of drawings within the book, working
from a photograph of an ordinary object. Find previously hidden
compositions and produce progressively more abstract renderings. Add
structural elements such as pop-ups, accordion folds, and pockets to
enhance the drawings. The result is a one-of-a-kind handmade book.
Letterpress printer Marie Dern studied at the University of California,
Berkeley, and Mills College in Oakland, where she focused on book arts.
In 1976 she established the Jungle Garden Press in Fairfax, California.
She has taught at the San Francisco Art Institute and the San Francisco
Center for the Book. Born in Salt Lake City, sculptor Carl Dern attended
the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of California,
Berkeley. He works in steel and cast bronze. He collaborates with Marie
Dern in bookmaking for Jungle Garden Press. Please visit
