[BKARTS] RBS Freshest Advices: March 2007

This message is being sent to the Book_Arts-L, ExLibris, and SHARP-L bulletin boards:

Rare Book School: FRESHEST ADVICES: March 2007

INTRODUCTORY PALEOGRAPHY COURSE
For nearly 20 years, RBS has offered an advanced paleography course taught by the school's Kenneth and Shirley Rendell Professor of Manuscript Studies, Albert Derolez. This course (next offered 15-19 October 2007 in Charlottesville) has been hard to get into (the prerequisites include strong Latin and previous formal exposure to paleography), and we have had many requests over the years for a basic course on this subject. Your wish is our command: Consuelo Dutschke (Columbia University) has begun to teach " Introduction to Paleography, 800-1500" at RBS in Charlottesville on a regular basis; see below, under 4-8 June.

OTHER NEWish COURSES
ANN R. HAWKINS (Texas Tech), editor of the new Pickering & Chatto anthology, Teaching Bibliography, Textual Criticism, and Book History, joins RBS old-timer DANIEL TRAISTER as co-instructor of the RBS course, Teaching the History of the Book, back in the RBS curriculum in Charlottesville after an absence of three years; see below, under 11-15 June. JAN STORM VAN LEEUWEN introduces a new RBS course, Seminar in the History of Bookbinding, in Baltimore in October.

RBS STAFF CHANGES
BARBARA HERITAGE is now Assistant Director of RBS. WILLIAM INGRAM, RBS assistant director for programs, resigned his position in January in order to enter a master's program at the University of Illinois's Graduate School of Library and Information Science (whatever Krummel wants, Krummel gets). His successor (so young, and yet so wise) is RYAN L. ROTH, a recent Brown University graduate who has been working in special collections at the University of Delaware.

2007 E. Ph. GOLDSCHMIDT FELLOW
TIMOTHY L. STINSON, a postdoctoral fellow at The Johns Hopkins University, is this year's RBS Goldschmidt Fellow.
