Re: [BKARTS] Summer Institute 2007 - Enroll Now!

Announcing the Third Annual Summer Institute at the Wells Book Arts Center

For its third annual summer institute, the Wells Book Arts Center is offering an extraordinary opportunity to learn from some of the nation's most important figures in the book arts. Intensive, hands-on courses in letterpress printing, bookbinding and lettering arts are taught by remarkable instructors in Wells' historic setting of lyric beauty. There will be three sessions for the summer of 2007.

Session I: July 8–14 – An Introduction to Book Arts and Modern Publishing is a foray into book arts and modern publishing that in a single course offers workshops, tours, and lectures given by a lively and varied panel of experts including Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress; Brenda Marsh, Vice President of Author Relations at Barnes & Noble; and David Kirk, author & illustrator of the popular Miss Spider children's book series.

Session II, July 15–21, features three separate courses. Printer and book artist Macy Chadwick’s Printing In Layers: Intuition, Innovation and Accident in the Artist’s Book; fine binder & book designer Don Glaister’s Putting the Art Back in the Craft; and lettering artist Suzanne Moore’s Equilibrium: Creating Text & Image Balance in the Artist’s Book.

Session III, July 22–28, also features three separate courses. Printer and book artist Barbara Tetenbaum’s Limited Edition Books: Experimental Image-making on the Vandercook; painter, printmaker and bookbinder Laura Wait's Artist’s Books: More Than Paper, Wood and Leather; and font designer Leslie Cabarga's Creating Logos, Type and Lettering form Scratch.

Students may select one course of the three offered in a session and all levels of experience, from beginners to experts, are welcome. Courses are limited to 8–12 participants who will enjoy well-equipped & air-conditioned studios on the Wells College campus, air- conditioned dorm rooms, and ample time to exchange ideas and enjoy camaraderie with fellow book artists.
