BiblioKinetics: the Pop-Up Artist Books of Shawn Sheehy on Exhibit at Asheville BookWorks
July 6 - August 11
Exhibition Reception
Thursday, July 19, 5:00-8:00 pm
This exhibit will be on display July 6 - August 11, it is free and open to the public.

Who hasn’t been surprised and delighted by the apparent magic of a pop-up book? Shawn Sheehy creates artists books that reflect on themes of sustainability, balance, and biological and cultural evolution. His pop-up books explore ecological principles such as organism interrelationships and system balance. Aesthetically, they carry the appeal of popular children's pop-ups; conceptually, they carry content to appeal to all ages. This exhibit will feature Shawn's process ephemera as well as his books.

Shawn Sheehy earned his MFA in Book & Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago. He currently serves as adjunct faculty teaching book arts at Columbia College. His artists' books can be found in the collections of the Newberry Library in Chicago, Special Collections at UCLA, the American Museum of Papermaking in Atlanta and the Houghton Library at Harvard University. Shawn serves as graphic designer and printer for the poetry broadside series published by Oneiros Press. He is a co-founder of Vespine Gallery in Chicago. Shawn is currently at work on a pop-up bestiary that features the creatures that inhabit post-apocalyptic Chicago. BookWorks will feature Shawn's work in an exhibition that opens this July at the BookWorks studio Classes taught by Shawn at BookWorks in June/July include:

Pop-Ups 101
July 16-20
Monday - Friday: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (1-hour lunch break)

In this 5-day workshop students will acquire sufficient knowledge of pop-up structures to shed light on the engineer’s secrets. Beginning with basic tools and techniques of pop-up construction, participants will quickly move on to building a variety of simple, versatile forms. Various ways of lifting those forms will be explored, especially those that give a pop-up a sense of animation. Participants will invent their own combinations of forms and lifts. Ultimately, the class will work together to edition a modest book of their own devising, so that each participant might take home a copy. Throughout the workshop, participants will view and discuss the work of commercial pop-up engineers. No experience necessary. Shawn enjoys teaching book arts workshops (especially pop-ups!) locally and nationally. Please call 828-255-8444 to register. Cost of the workshop is $350 + materials fee.
