[BKARTS] Laponite

Hi Christine,

You may want to be aware that the laponite is a silica based material
that does need a respirator to mix it. On the Conservation Resources
website it says to mix it at a 2% concentration.

Also, Andrea Totten who was a student at the Queen's conservation
program with me did her thesis project on laponite and published it in
"The Paper Conservator" in 2003. She did SEM images of items cleaned
with laponite and showed that the silica residues remain behind no
matter how it is 'cleaned'. Since silica is a very hard substance the
concern has been that leftover residues will cause extra wear and tear
as pages are opened and closed. Just something to consider when using
