[BKARTS] MCBA congratulates 2008 Minnesota Book Artist Award winner Jody Williams!

Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA) is pleased to announce Jody Williams
as the recipient of the inaugural Minnesota Book Artist Award.

The Minnesota Book Artist Award is a new honor co-sponsored by MCBA and The
Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, presented as part of the annual
Minnesota Book Awards. The honor recognizes one Minnesota book artist for
excellence throughout a body of work, as well as for significant
contributions made to Minnesota's book arts community.

"MCBA is excited about the new Minnesota Book Artist Award and proud to be a
co-sponsor," said Jeff Rathermel, MCBA Artistic Director. "For its first
recipient, Jody is a natural choice. She is an extremely gifted artist with
an intense dedication to the book arts community. The engaging nature of her
work is equaled only by her generous spirit."

Jody has been publishing limited edition artist's books in Minnesota since
1989. "Books communicate information and ideas; boxes keep things safe and
hidden," she says. "Most of my work deals with artist's books and boxes, and
with the relationship between communication and containers." She has a
passion for miniature books and boxes, and discovered early on that her most
successful work is small in format. Jody is a popular and highly regarded
instructor at MCBA, as well as at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and
other schools and art centers throughout the United States and in Europe.

An exhibit celebrating Jody's work will run February 12 through March 2,
2008 in Open Book's Cowles Literary Commons. A reception will be held
Friday, February 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at MCBA, with a brief presentation
at 6:30. The reception is free and open to the public, and will feature
refreshments and live music. Please join MCBA and the book arts community in
congratulating Jody on this well-deserved honor!

Exhibits of Jody's work will also be featured at other venues statewide
beginning this March, including St. Paul's Central Library. The award will
be officially presented at the 20th annual Minnesota Book Awards gala on
April 12, 2008 in St. Paul. For more information on the gala or to reserve
your ticket (tickets go on sale January 28), visit www.thefriends.org or
call 651-366-6497. The Minnesota Book Awards is a statewide, year-round
outreach program of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library in
partnership with the Office of the Mayor of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul
Public Library.

As the largest and most comprehensive center of its kind in the nation,
Minnesota Center for Book Arts celebrates the book as a vibrant contemporary
art form that takes many shapes. From the traditional crafts of papermaking,
letterpress printing and bookbinding to experimental artmaking and
self-publishing techniques, MCBA supports the limitless creative evolution
of book arts. To learn more, visit our website at www.mnbookarts.org.
